Last night, Amazon.com jumped into the movie business, with its own, online film submission site, Amazon Studios , backed by the help of a number of notable USC Film School advisors. Despite coming from Amazon, the local involvement is heavy, with USC's School of Cinematic Arts heavily involved, as well as other local entertainment execs.

Last week, Los Angeles-based Stroome (www.stroome.com), a new startup originally spawned out of a project at the USC Annenberg School of Communications, won $200,000 in the 2010 Knight News Challenge. Tom Grasty: Essentially, we started off as a graduate school project at USC. A few months later, we won the USC New Venture Competition.

Mike Tringe earned his BA in History and Science from Harvard, and his MFA in Film Production from USC. He’s worked as an English and Film teacher at the American School of Tangier, and has also assistant taught film production at USC. Sara Akhteh received her BA in Film Theory from UCSC and her MFA from USC in Production.

There is lots of competition in this area for serving retirement homes. We actually wrote the business plan in a business plan class at USC. The other thing, which turns out to be a competitive advantage we have over our competitors, is your data is completely safe with us. We made a decision not to go for venture capital early.

We have world-class universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and more. Many of the Valley tech firms saw advertising as “beneath them&# and many VCs in the first boom encouraged people to focus on eyeballs rather than dollars. But LA is not Silicon Valley and we don’t need to aspire to be so.

As I watched my kids' eyeballs move over, as well as looked at the research data and advertising data which saw TV's share shrinking, I started looking into new media. There's more competition, but there's a lot more available to you as a developer. Plus, exposure through USC led me to the Tech Coast Angels.
