On a micro level, you can do your part to fix tech's gender problem by recruiting people with diverse backgrounds and place them in a company culture that rewards those who challenge the status quo. In 1987 I arrived in Santa Barbara with a bike, $3,000 and a chip on my shoulder, tons of passion and something to prove. In 1995 I started my first company and bought a fleet of 3 Volkswagen Beetles. In 2000 I sold company 1, including the 3 VWs. The buyer hired me to run company 2. Found the 2 dogs great homes.
