I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. I used an image from Roger Smith that describes the varying roles of a CTO as the company matures.

I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. Ethan recruited a great team of people to help build this proposition including Lisa Robinson running marketing and Rahul Thathoo as CTO who have been working tirelessly for the past year. The company was called Red Beacon.

Enter the light bulb, which was that this was a real opportunity to create a new platform, which can facilitate connecting experts with users. He built their entire publishing and analytics platform, and spent more than four years there before he came to join us to start this. Tony Adam is an advisor, he was formerly at MySpace.

You’ll get sales information from your VP of Sales, marketing information from your VP Marketing, tech information from your CTO and so on. I had long ago ceded the knowledge and responsibility for making the detailed technical recommendations about platforms, databases, hosting solutions, etc. Skipping is insidious.

Parenting has always required a village of support, and we consider our platform to be that village. I started as a teenager, and I did babysitting, life guarding, and swim coaching. We've had a lot of advisors along the way, in the financial and technology realm, which has helped us with everything.

Our founder, Yves Sisteron, was my mentor and board member at my first startup. And the fact that we’ve all worked for a decade with Dana Kibler who is our long-time CFO and now helping run Investment Operations & Platform Services we have a truly senior & killer internal team. Mafias matter a lot to me, as well.
