The Lean Startup approach dictates that successful customer development is an iterative process. By conceptualizing, selling, gathering feedback and then developing a product, startups achieve success more quickly and economically. Eric (Ries) was a student in one of the very earliest customer development classes at Berkley.

To say he has had an impact on the web would be an understatement. He wanted to build direct customer relationships to get product feedback but only 2% of customers would ever return their registration cards. So when he saw the browser it instantly dawned on him that this would be the greatest customer development tool ever.

It wasn’t so many years ago that starting a new e-commerce business on the Internet was a complex custom development project, usually costing a million dollars or more. Now you can do it for free, or a few hundred dollars, with one of the many web building tools available, like Shopify or Weebly.

Bill Gross is the man responsible for the overwhelming amount of monetization on the web. My take was that this follows three trends: a) customer involvement in product design, b) mass customization [e.g. On the first point – think of Steven Blank’s customer development but for physical products.
