It’s important to define your growth strategy, document it, communicate it to your team, and align metrics and employee rewards to target goals. Utilize outside expertise and mentoring. No matter how much energy, experience, and passion you have, there is always more you can learn from an Advisory Board of external experts or a mentor.
Seth’s interest in helping others grew out of his lack of having a mentor. In 1995, while in high school, Seth wanted to start a business scanning paper documents for companies, but realized it was a non-starter when he learned that a scanner costs $4k. Leverage a feedback platform like Get Satisfaction or UserVoice.
Unfortunately, work and satisfaction have become an oxymoron in many businesses. I loved it when my boss gave me the additional responsibility of mentoring others in solving tough problems. Each of us can remember a time when we prepared a report that no one read, or filed physical documents never used, and no one seemed to care.
In my own role as advisor and mentor to many entrepreneurs and startups, I was struck by how relevant and critical these same initiatives are to even the earliest stage businesses. Your standards for product quality, sales growth, and customer satisfaction must be documented and reviewed prior to results and performance reviews.
As a mentor and advisor to entrepreneurs and startups, and an angel investor, my passion is to find and nurture those entrepreneurs with innovative business ideas and acumen, to make them into successful business owners. Business owners get their satisfaction from happy customers and happy stakeholders.
Inside the organization, it also pays to offer some of your time for coaching and mentoring to less experienced team members, as an entrée to a supportive relationship. Constant attention to work devices, location, and travel is not humanly sustainable without loss of quality, satisfaction, and productivity. Loners need not apply.

One of the attributes that I often recommend to the business professionals and entrepreneurs I mentor is to always be totally accountable for your actions and ideas. Document plans and progress, with checkpoints. Be available for mentoring and coaching to others. Lack of accountability can permeate an entire organization.

The result is fewer and fewer new ideas are volunteered by prospective leaders and key team members, and the business suffers from poor customer satisfaction or loss of market share. Here I recommend that you narrow your focus, if possible, and document specifics of impact, cost, and value.
Offer one-minute mentoring up front, and stick to it. A better approach is offer the loan of a guide book or documentation that you would have to review first anyway, or point out an expert in the department or outside who might be able to answer the question directly. Have you ever noticed how many “Do you have a minute?” Don’t do it.

Be aware that communication is much more than just talking and documenting – it’s active listening, building relationships, and walking the walk as well as the talk. On an ongoing basis, it also means mentoring for development of existing team members to prepare them for both the purpose and execution of new functions.

As a long-time business advisor and entrepreneur mentor, I see this problem all too often. Documenting your work list will help force you to prioritize and schedule it. Many people find great satisfaction in just checking off completed items. Otherwise, your business and your career suffers, and you may never even see it coming.
Document required systems for repeatability without you. Use mentoring to help people develop as your business develops. Let me assure you that your best path to business success, as well as your personal satisfaction, is to work on making your business work without you, rather than working harder on the business.
Define and document role content and standards for performance. They need your mentoring, tools, and historical data to be a top performer. Thus paying for sales volume, when you desire customer satisfaction, will not get you high performance. Diligently provide follow-up and support on assistance requests.
