The University of Southern California has just received a huge, $200M donation from Oracle founder Larry Ellison , to create a new cancer treatment research center. According to the school, the donation will create the Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC , a multi-disciplinary center focused on the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Bolt Threads , which says it is creating high performance, sustainable fabrics created from natural proteins rather than hydrocarbons, announced the partnership along with a $50M, Series C investment on Thursday.

The UCLA Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine , and lifescience equipment maker Leica Biosystems said this morning that they are in a collaboration around digital pathology. According to the two, UCLA will help validate a digital pathology offering from Leica Biosystems, through a team led by Dr. Scott Binder. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Newport Beach-based Evantix , a software-as-a-service provider of third party risk management software, has been acquired by Optiv Security , the companies said Thursday afternoon. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. Optiv said it has acquired "substantially all" of the assets of Evantix, and will combine that technology into its existing third party risk services.

The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, designed and launched by Hawthorne-based SpaceX , successfully returned to earth on Wednesday, splashing down 261 miles southwest of Long Beach with more than 3,700 pounds of cargo. NASA said that the craft splashed down at 2:51 p.m. EDT with NASA cargo and science and technology samples from the International Space Station.

Santa Monica-based private equity investor Clearlake Capital Group announced this morning that it is acquiring Vision Solutions , a data protection, high availability, and cloud migration software. Financial details of the acquisition were not announced. Vision Solutions was owned by Thoma Bravo. Vision Solutions is based in Irvine. Clearlake said it was advised by UBS Investment Bank, Evercore, and Forosin the deal, with Vision and Thoma Bravo advised by Jeffries LLC.

The Walt Disney Company is pulling out of developing video games, saying this week that it is ending its Disney Infinity console game business. Disney's Infinity games had tied together a console video game with toys, with interactive figures which changed and added different Disney characters to the Infinity game, modified the environment, added weapons or clothing, and more.
