I just had an all-too common conversation with the founder of a startup who had spent more than a year working with a softwaredevelopment company who had produced a mess. The mess really comes from a developer who was willing to get started on a product that was not fully thought out.
Instead, what they had was a contract that promised Agile SoftwareDevelopment with Rapid Iterations and an incredibly vague list of features. In all four cases, I would claim that what's at fault is a common misunderstanding in Agile SoftwareDevelopment. My belief is that you shouldn't sign that contract.
This is a private group of CTOs who are responsible for softwaredevelopment within their companies. They are generally the senior most person responsible for custom softwaredevelopment, database design, database administration, web development, etc. Yes, there are some events around particular technologies.
There’s quite a bit of truth to what Mark is saying about startup softwaredevelopers, but my guess is that there’s another reason that it seems harder to find developers in this context. So, likely quite a few of the people who were seeking startup developers were looking to find people for very low dollars.
There's an old adage in softwaredevelopment that I refer to all the time: The first 90% of development takes 90% of the time. I used this when I taught software engineering. And I use it all the time now when I get the kind of message that I received: I'm looking for a web developer to continue work on my website.
