Google and Yahoo aren''t going to buy them, AOL has already made its bet, and your only real path to an exit is an IPO for any kind of liquidity. If you go back to 2005 and 2006 and look at a company which would have a $5M pre- then, it''s now $8 to $10M, all else equal. Their only option is an IPO. There are just not buyers out there.

I had early success working in-house with Matt Coffin at LowerMyBills in 2005, and then I was brought on by Yahoo to build out the Yahoo Publisher Network Team. Is this at all competitive with LinkedIn? There are lots of people there doing competitive intelligence, or doing research on an industry or landscape.

I left that environment with that mindset, to create first AdExchange, and then AdECN around 2004-2005. I think it's fair to say we did that--Rightmedia sold to Yahoo, we sold to Microsoft, and Doubleclick sold to Google. It's now clearly also become a top priority at Google. Finally, how far along until you have product?

In our industry we call that a TAM (total addressable market) and I’m sure you can even Google methods for calculating a TAM. But that’s harder to build in 2016 than it was in say 2005. This is based on “price elasticity” and you can google that to understand it better. Competition.

One of the big, open source successes in both Southern California and the software world was Gluecode Software , which was based in Los Angeles and acquired by IBM in 2005. We also work with Google's App Engine and widget toolkit. Adam also had a stint at Mission Ventures, and ran worldwide sales for open source middleware at IBM.

An obvious example is Google who may have gotten less market attention if there would have been 8 well-financed competitors during the 2001-2005 timeframe. When your competition does irrational things to grow fueled by low-cost capital it makes it harder for you to compete by playing by the conventional rules.

An A-round investment in the late 90's, or even in 2005/2006, or 2007, was a $5-8M check. My competition is not Rustic Canyon, it's not Clearstone, or the other venture firms in town. Outside of Google, they've been one of the most successful companies over the last five or six years, in my opinion. We're taking it seriously.
