Storage hardware developer Adaptec is shutting down its Lake Forest, Orange County site, according to sources close to the company. Adaptec moved into Lake Forest in August of 2008, when it acquired Aristos Logic , a developer of RAID chips and technology. What I really liked in my conversations with The Hive is that they are willing to work with and fund ventures that would never get VC dollars.

Symwave Hires Three, Moves To OC

Laguna Niguel-based Symwave, a provider of mixed signal and analog semiconductors, said Monday that it has hired on three new vice presidents, and moved itself to Orange County. According to Symwave, it has hired Gideon Intrater as VP of Solutions Architecture; John O'Neill as VP of Marketing, and Craig Stein as VP of Engineering. The firm was previously located in San Diego.

Victor Tsao Invests In Israeli Semi Firm

Victor Tsao, who founded and sold Orange County-based Linksys to Cisco for approximately $500M in 2003, has made an investment in a Israeli semiconductor firm developing chips for multimedia WiFi home networking. According to Celeno Communications, Tsao has invested in the firm and has joined the company's advisory board. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed. Tsao is investing alongside Greylock Israel, a venture firm where Tsao also serves as special advisor.

Western Digital Axes 2,500

Number of employees in Orange County affected by the cuts was not disclosed. Lake Forest-based Western Digital announced this morning that it is cutting 2,500 employees, or five percent of the firm's workforce, as it sees softer demand for the firm's hard disk drives. According to the firm, demand for its products in the December quarter is "significantly below" the firm's expectations.
