Google has confirmed the firing of 20 percent of Motorola Mobility employees. According to Google’s SEC filing on the 3rd this month and signed on the 13th 2012 Google will go ahead with and reduce the motorola unit’s 20,000 employees by 4,000 with two thirds of the cut in the US. Google will however feel the layoffs.

I received dozens of long emails each day with press releases, pitches, news and information. Most emails were nothing short of a report. I can’t even begin to imagine what investors feel like when they’re being pitched by so many people, week after week, or some CEO’s that receive 2000+ emails each day.

Yet I am amazed to see US Census Bureau data from 2012 that at least 50%, maybe up to 75%, of small businesses still have no presence at all. I still remember my disappointment the first time I published my website, did an immediate Google search on the name, and it said my company didn’t exist. Viral marketing needs a website.

What I want to answer with this post (long though it may be) is: Why did Web 2.0 ask microsoft, aol/time warner & google]. We had email, instant messaging, group calendars, discussion boards, etc. They had a proprietary browser, their own search engine, their own content, chat rooms, email system, etc.

According to the most recent study by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, there were approximately 514,000 new businesses created per month in the US in 2012. The days when you could launch your business with a new web site, and the phone would begin to ring, are long gone.
