When you see startups like SpaceX and Pinterest grow from a low valuation to a billion dollars in just a few years, it’s easy to assume that if you just keep doing what you are doing, you can get there as well. Utilize mergers and acquisitions to accelerate growth. But they can be spectacular growth vehicles when they work.

Elon Musk is doing both of these, first by expanding his Tesla electric vehicle initiatives beyond cars, into self-driving taxis and trucks, and secondly by entering new domains of transportation with SpaceX and Hyperloop.

2017 was the year SpaceX demonstrated their premise of reusability to bring down the cost of satellite launches and space travel, with multiple Falcon rockets and a reused capsule giving repeat performances. Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods this year is just another very visible step in their expansion.

If Bird has thousands of scooters in a neighborhood (and if it can acquire these scooters at cheaper prices due to scale advantages) then it’s significantly more difficult for new entrants to launch without serious capital and it’s hard to get serious capital from investors who perceive you’re late to the game.
