Based on my own experience as a mentor and angel investor, I find that as many as ninety percent of startups fail in the first five years, despite their best efforts. It helps to advertise your new presence with a grand opening, viral video, and traditional advertising to highlight entry into the arena.

From there most websites unfortunately don’t know what to really do with it so it basically just becomes a way to log you in and potentially allow advertisers to serve up more targeted (and therefore higher CPM) ads. Based on my current role as a mentor to entrepreneurs, I will paraphrase and recommend Whiddon’s top techniques in business terms: Build an image of likability and rapport. You can also establish authority by writing and public speaking. We all relish working with and buying from people we can relate to on a personal level.

Tracy is knowledgeable enough to talk tech and swap design & product stories with other founders, but she realized early that networking amongst this group and reading and writing in their journals would not bring her more customers. Once off the ground she could attract mentors from her industry.

It was cool that I spoke at the White House last year about mentoring. I am very active in mentoring women and minorities. What advice would you give to employers to advertise their company to job seekers? Meaning, write very good job descriptions, but that doesn’t mean you need to write long ones.
