Because market is such a broad topic, I’m restricting these lessons to PR marketing (as opposed SEO, SEM, product marketing, etc.). You always have too much technical debt, too many problems, staff members quitting, not enough capital, customer complaints, etc. That’s because that’s how it ALWAYS feels at a startup.

Not because they didn’t want to do Pay-per-click (they are huge buyers of SEM) but because they didn’t want other people to know what they paid for clicks! Google was clear that they WOULD NOT go into this business. Amazon was planning on working with GoTo.com but actually pulled out just before launch.

After talking with Constantine and the team, I was amazed at the market dynamics, and how well we are positioned to capitalize on it. I got involved talking with Constantine, to see if I could poke as many holes as I could in the business, and found that it is completely bullet proof. Do users buy or rent these?

The key to being able to run a business that isn’t yet profitable (on operating margin) is availability of capital to finance losses and preferably at a cost that isn’t too punitive to the founders and employees. It’s funny how scarcity of capital can focus one’s mind. So if you’re able to raise easily no problem. End of story.

Google’s market capitalization is in the stratosphere for a reason – keyword search advertising is highly effective. However, Search Engine Management (SEM) is not a “set and forget” exercise. For instance, it does not make sense to develop an Affiliate Market presence until you have established an effective SEM campaign.

Marketing with long payback is precisely what requires venture capital. It would take 2 years to catch up but believe me they have the capital to do so. You may have paid marketing: SEM, Social Media Ads, Banner Ads, email lists, etc. That is how great businesses are built. We did the planning work up front.
