Santa MOnica-based Demand Media made a surprise move this morning, saying it has appointed former Ticketmaster CEO Sean Moriarty as its new CEO--and also acquiring Moriarty''s startup, Saatchi Art. According to Demand Media, it paid $17M for Saatchi Art, in a mix of cash and stock, in a deal which will add revenues of $0.5M
USA Today cited the activity of such companies as Demand Media, Break.com, Buzzmedia, Citysearch, Google, JibJab, ShoeDazzle, and Viddy in Los Angeles, and Qualcomm, Slacker, Sorenson Media, and MOGL in San Diego as examples of those cities' active startup base.

Yet in LA we have hugely successful entrepreneurs who have built big companies like Overture, CitySearch, MySpace, TicketMaster.com, LowerMyBills, Commission Junction, eHarmony and on and on. I though to myself, “too many young entrepreneurs in LA seem to feel pressured by NorCal VCs to move to the Bay Area. I hear it all the time.
We have all of the 2nd-time entrepreneurs from Overture, CitySearch, MySpace, etc. on to their next companies and that produced Demand Media, a public company who even with a slight recent reduction in share price is still trading at $1.3 LA and Seattle are in the second (or third) major wave of technology innovation.
We both had different types and interests in men and thought it would be great if there was a Citysearch for women based upon types. We started seeing a demand for what we were doing and from there began throwing singles parties, doing match making, and date coaching. We spent the time researching and gathering all the data we could.
