I've had several Startup CTO Consulting sessions recently where it became apparent that the Founder needed help with the business and product as much or more than the technology. Then we discussed how they could go about finding this startup business advisor. Do you have any suggestions for how to find a good mentor?

Beware of Mentors. His basic point was: If someone, including me, tells you something isn’t a great idea and there’s no market for it there are only two acceptable responses. " Today I had two conversations with early stage startups (see Free CTO Consulting ). It was a top post on StartupRoar on Tuesday.

He had an idea for a startup that would help consumers better book service jobs and would take on Service Magic, which he believed had a business model that could be disrupted. I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. In the same year they won Business Insider’s Startup competition.

If you were a student in college, working on a startup idea, what would spur you to drop your education plans, and go full time on your startup? We understand you were in school when you started this? I started playing around with a similar idea in my freshman year. Both have been great mentors ever since.

I’ve spoken before about our desire at Upfront Ventures to fund really big ideas that solve hard problems, are science led and if successful will both have a positive effect on people’s lives as well as make great financial returns. We’re not Pollyannaish about this. They have raised $14 million to date.
