I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. I used an image from Roger Smith that describes the varying roles of a CTO as the company matures.

I’m super excited to announce that GRP Partners led the investment in Ethan Anderson’s new company MyTime (link has LA-based merchants but will give you a good feel for the product). ” So Ethan went to work as a product manager at Google Video. I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan.

Enter the light bulb, which was that this was a real opportunity to create a new platform, which can facilitate connecting experts with users. He built their entire publishing and analytics platform, and spent more than four years there before he came to join us to start this. Tony Adam is an advisor, he was formerly at MySpace.

You’ll get sales information from your VP of Sales, marketing information from your VP Marketing, tech information from your CTO and so on. I had long ago ceded the knowledge and responsibility for making the detailed technical recommendations about platforms, databases, hosting solutions, etc. Skipping is insidious.
