I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (ChiefTechnologyOfficer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. That’s why Roger Smith puts the focus of the CTO on programming for the earliest stage.
Several people have recently come to me to help them source and/or hire full-time CTOs for their startup having found me through my post that looks at: Startup CTO Salary and Equity Data. The first thing I do is suggest they explore if they really need to hire a full-time CTO for their startup and if so, what kind of CTO they need.
I just had an all-too common conversation with the founder of a startup who had spent more than a year working with a softwaredevelopment company who had produced a mess. The mess really comes from a developer who was willing to get started on a product that was not fully thought out. How will you be taking this to market?

Many CEOs of software-enabled businesses call us with a similar concern: Are we getting the right results from our software team? I have always been in engineering, and was a softwaredeveloper for some time, and also Director of Engineering. My sweet spot is taking companies to market. They don't have to worry about things liked Adwords or click marketing. As the Dot Com boom hit the Bay Area, I also worked for a number of startups.
The reason is that good attributes apply equally well to “external” partners, as they do to internal partners, like a co-founder or CTO. If both of you are experts at softwaredevelopment, even though one loves design and the other loves coding, that still won’t get the marketing done.
