We''ve got a grid of 500 nodes, handling a billion and a half clicks and call impressions, which we drive for our customers. We had a fair amount of corporate services which had all been supplied by AT&T, so we had to create our own infrastructure team. We index towards those categories, and we do really well.

Many entrepreneurs I know don’t realize that the language they learned in the corporate world, or even their recent MBA class, won’t get them ahead in the startup world today. A pivot is a quick change of direction or strategic correction by a startup, based on customer feedback or changes in technology and the marketplace.

I got to experience much of the local culture and customs. My first corporate job was at First Interstate Bank where I worked in Corporate Finance. Large corporations can be soulless. I wish I were good in the email category. It was not a touristy experience. And it taught me at 22 to be my own man.

Customers: A company’s only sustainable source of cash is sales, so you need to keep track of your business development efforts. Items that paint a big picture include revenue by major product area, cost of goods, and operating expenses by category. Detail isn’t important; tracking your progress is.
