A question that I still hear debated often is whether a new online platform startup growth strategy should focus on user count or profits. When their deep pockets went empty, Facebook stepped in, but demanded revenue from ads. Facebook is indeed the largest growth site on the web, with almost three billion user accounts, all free.

What I want to answer with this post (long though it may be) is: Why did Web 2.0 encouraging an open platform where 3rd parties can make lots of money]. Social Networking in Web 1.0: GeoCities, Tripod & Yahoo! By the mid-nineties we had the World Wide Web, which gave us a standard way to publish web pages using HTML.

What happens when you apply big data and computer science to digest all of that social data being fed into Twitter and other social platforms--and cross match that to location information? We''re also using web articles and other data sources, and cross referencing those with location information. My degree is from USC in big data.
