Credit: Apex Today, Apex announced their Series B funding round, led by XYZ Ventures and CRV, with participation from Upfront. Is it because of the rich engineering talent coming out of Caltech, UCLA, USC, Harvey Mudd, and all the other universities? Recently I had the pleasure of speaking with Ian on This Week in Startups.

Scripted.com , which operates an online marketplace for professionally written content--which was originally backed by LA investors--has raised $9M more in a funding. The new funding came from Crosslink Capital and Redpoint Ventures, and also included angels Gil Penchina, Auren Hoffman (LiveRamp) and Justin Moore (Axcient).

I recommend that you start by writing down the attributes you would want people to think about when they think about your brand. World-class education including Caltech, USC and UCLA. I’ve heard it many founders of VC backed companies in LA who tell me that in their NorCal VC meetings they are told, “we might be interested but we’d want you to relocate to the Bay Area if we funded you.&#. We have world-class universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and more. As a result many funds are OK with big bets.

Fariborz Masseh: The idea of funding a business plan competition is not a new idea. In 2003 or 2004, I moved to California, and decided to change from running an engineering company into running a hedge fund. Now, I run a hedge fund and finance firm in Southern California. It has been done before, at a number of schools.
