Pasadena-based Idealab has led a round into LA-spawned Mingly , a developer of software which connects Gmail with a user's socialnetworks. Mingly said it raised $500,000 in a seed round of financing from Idealab, Allen Morgan, Alex Karelin, and other angels Wednesday. and Startup Nights here in LOs Angeles.

According to those reports, San Francisco-based Rapportive , a developer of plug-ins which overlay socialnetworking information on your Gmail account, has been acquired by LinkedIn. The irony: a sad state that even with the huge number of socialnetwork applications we have at our disposal, we’re oftentimes lost, unable to keep up, or still lose touch so easily. It’s not your fault that we can only be social creatures to a certain extent before brain overload.
However, the other pieces of what we do are a somewhat evolved model similar to the early days of what Bill Gross did at Idealab. I ran Altavista from 2001 to 2002 in Europe, and came back to the states, doing a lot of consulting between the Dot Com crash and the beginning of socialnetworking.
This included stabilizing a historically negative traffic and user trend, reducing the operational cost of the business by nearly 90 percent and pivoting the product from its legacy as a socialnetwork to a social entertainment destination. Idealab continues to explore a range of technology frontiers.
