I just had an all-too common conversation with the founder of a startup who had spent more than a year working with a softwaredevelopment company who had produced a mess. We end up using WordPress a lot as the marketing front-end of our web sites. WordPress - we spent quite a bit of time talking about how you could do a lot with WordPress to provide simple forms of lots of functionality. WordPress is pretty easy to hack. And the back-end is something that a non-technical founder can manage.

Developers (and Founders) are challenged to know how much is okay in terms of bugs. I’m challenged getting developers to work with me when I can’t pay them market wages. Developers like to do things their way even when it doesn’t meet the needs of the business. The market is great for developers.

Tim Berry has a great post on Why I Hate Those Huge Market Numbers tells us that he doesn’t like to see business plans with multi-billion market numbers used as the basis for projections. It’s the old – 5% of massive market gives us a big number. And it becomes really important to have that granularity really fast.
Most often at the earliest point in the life of a startup, the dominant need is certainly to produce product to get something in the market, get funding, etc. What worries me a bit is how often I read that startups should hire a developer / hands-on lead developer. How can I control costs but effectively get stuff developed?
