Unfortunately, from my own experience, it’s not that simple, and not doing some preparation first can easily result in stress, lack of satisfaction, and a hard road to success. Use networking, the Internet, and personal contacts to really understand the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind related success stories. Find your level of passion early.
I went to an industry event where people actually called me self-centered for writing publicly. My friends said, “I don’t need another network. That’s what happens when you join a network and have kids. Here’s the thing: If you never try new product and new networks you’ll never learn anything. I already have Facebook.”.
It’s one thing when you provide a blank space to write your goals when you are in a classroom and there’s a teacher who can help you. Of course, improving customer satisfaction is a goal, but the system would drill down to specific issues such as knowledge of store layout. In some context, you might call this a support network.
Without a measurable objective, you will be constantly frustrated by not seeing progress, and you will never feel success satisfaction. You probably already know the key challenges to complete each step, but it helps to write them down, review them with peers, and have a written list to update as you learn more.
Most of you business professionals that I know have at least thought about or talked about starting their own business, to get more control, make more money, or to get more satisfaction out of their life. You must feel satisfaction. Don’t be shy about networking for advisors with business experience for coaching and mentoring.
Write down your top 5 core values and review them often. Find time in your work schedule for networking, working lunches, and business conferences, where you can test your ideas, learn, and generate support. Take satisfaction from wins to balance against setbacks. Define a clear break between work and private activities.
In my experience, you will have the most satisfaction and success if you can combine a strong sense of “purpose” with a quantifiable business opportunity. Write it down and validate it though friends and social media. Start networking to pull together a complementary team. Set some specific goals and milestones for a business.
Publish a regular blog, contribute to relevant social networks, and write a “white paper” on your technology. Follow-up for customer satisfaction. No name, picture, address, or business history only convinces customers that you are hiding, located in an un-trustable country, or don’t have a clue. They will exit quickly.

It became a theme in my keynote at Caltech on the future of social networking. A huge shout out to Ricky Wong of NYCSteals for helping me with the write-up. Leverage a feedback platform like Get Satisfaction or UserVoice. It then permeated my thinking and I began to explore the theme more as I looked around at web properties.

Even if your plan seems simple and intuitively obvious to you, writing it down and having it reviewed by experienced friends will moderate your passion and assure you that all key elements are addressed. Network extensively for partners, investors, and suppliers. Do a written business plan to validate your thinking.
On the day after Intel announced its acquisition of San Diego machine learning startup Nervana Systems, investor Steve Jurvetson told me he was feeling a sense of satisfaction about a call he made three years ago, and how it has been playing out.
In this age of constant change, I usually find myself writing about what has changed. Business connections and networking are still the source of major new clients, new job opportunities, and most promotions. Here is my list of the basics that some people in business tend to forget: Showing up consistently must still be priority one.
You can also establish authority by writing and public speaking. As an example, early businesses that were willing to publish their commitment to “customer satisfaction or your money back” became influencers. Facebook initially capitalized on exclusivity by allowing only Harvard students to join their social network.
According to a classic Gallup survey , job satisfaction for employees has reached an all-time low. As a mentor to many aspiring entrepreneurs, I’m often asked what it takes to get satisfaction from this lifestyle. Learn new skills that will make you an expert in that domain, and both satisfaction and wealth will follow.

aka: An Open Letter to the Next Big Social Network) - 500 Hats , November 1, 2010 I've held off writing this post for a long time, because I couldn't quite get my head around all the issues. But I didn’t write it for you; I wrote it for myself. If network B has 20 users than it’s value is 400 (20*20). call to arms.

You get the personal satisfaction of making something out of almost nothing. An inflated sense of financial well-being can result in sloppy budgeting and accounting as you write checks here and there without pause. You can network to give and get referrals for other businesses. You get to call the shots.
Brad Feld seems to write books faster than I can read and write about them. He teamed up with his wife, Amy Batchelor , to write about about the impact that entrepreneurship has on relationships and what to do about it. And this story was written pre Internet, pre smartphone, pre social networks. They want to win.
We spent a lot of time talking about what type of company we wanted to create, how many employees we’d eventually have, whether we would take funding, our lifestyle, and a dozen other things that had nothing to do with writing software. There can be quite a bit of satisfaction in that in itself. Of course there are risks.
