Fred talks about it here – he beat me to the punch because I always wanted to write about how awesome this is. Only later did I realize that this was part of Dharmesh Shah’s larger blog and that the software was based on the popular “stack overflow&# software. It’s an awesome implementation.

So I thought I’d write about out with what I would look for in a VC knowing what I know now and why. Traditional software vs. SaaS. SEO marketing vs. social marketing. and I realized that without years of experience it is tough to answer this question. Most VCs are book smart. Think of web vs. mobile. It’s not you.

Because market is such a broad topic, I’m restricting these lessons to PR marketing (as opposed SEO, SEM, product marketing, etc.). Marketing futures can be really good for enterprise software companies where the information is passed between sales rep and potential customer in terms of near-term roadmap. Read their articles.

It says that selling an airplane ticket for $500 and getting paid a $5 fees by the airlines (1% gross margin) is not the same thing as selling $500 of software that you built (>90% gross margin). The questions that a VC mulls before writing a check are precisely the questions you should be asking yourself. Market Size.

You and I are from a web background, and usually, when you run into problem--if you're not asking for something unreasonable like artificial intelligence--there is always a way to write some software, or put together a workaround to deal with the issue.
