Last night, Amazon.com jumped into the movie business, with its own, online film submission site, Amazon Studios , backed by the help of a number of notable USC Film School advisors. million in awards over the next year to the best movies submitted to the site--with an exclusive option for Warner Bros. Last week, Los Angeles-based Stroome (www.stroome.com), a new startup originally spawned out of a project at the USC Annenberg School of Communications, won $200,000 in the 2010 Knight News Challenge. Tom Grasty: Essentially, we started off as a graduate school project at USC. A few months later, we won the USC New Venture Competition.

My background is that I was at IAC, focused on advertising solutions and advertising engagement. Recently, USC's film school started a comedic content major. We teach people how to make web series and video for the web, and specifically for sites like YouTube, and independent networks like Flip and Dailymotion. We teach through video tutorials, with courses around specific sites, like how to make content for FunnyorDie, taught by one of the staff writers from FunnyOrDie.

Some days I respond to questions asked by folks like yourself, the press, or an entity doing a case study, i.e. Citrix, RIM, USC. We have traditionally been a company heard about through word of mouth, radio advertising (now our own show) and from a Mini sighting. CTM and USC, staff of Citrix Online, TCA members, and now you!

Los Angeles is an amazing place, and we have fashion, e-commerce, advertising, games, media, entertainment companies which I think make Los Angeles a phenomenal place. I was just judging the USC gaming hackathon. USC is producing lots of very talented game professionals, and so is UCLA. Howard Marks: Absolutely.
