I was on This Week in Venture Capital (TWiVC) again this week with Jason Calacanis. plus a large settlement on patent disputes paid from Google) so Bill did well on it. Overture never built the destination site to monetize from. Overture sold for $1.6 billion to Yahoo! But bill is a BIG idea guy. He’ll get deals done.

The critical success factors for a product business are well known, starting with selling every unit with a gross margin of 50 percent or more, building a patent and other intellectual property, and continuous product improvement. The investor perspective is that no manufacturing or inventory implies a minimal need for capital up front.

In fact, I think the evidence is clear that many entrepreneurs started their journey while still in college, and capitalized on all the resources there, before moving on: Extend your technology focus with business basics. Build a web site and incorporate while in school. Initiate networking to find peer partners and investors.

A few years ago, I first saw an interesting step in that direction via the classic book “ Entrepreneurial DNA ,” by Joe Abraham , with his assessment web site. Too many Innovators are like Dean Kamen , still struggling with the Segway Human Transporter , while holding over 1000 other device patents.
