When Facebook was opening up their platform, these guys thought that it was an interesting way to do user acquisition and preference acquisition of individuals and that they would be able find a way to monetize it in commerce-oriented verticals. So without my weighing into the pro’s / con’s of this I can say that I believe it will capture a large segment of the market but leave room for “open platforms&# to play a big role. Thus you see television manufacturers rushing to create content ecosystems, app platforms, TV OS’s and Internet offerings.
