In a bid to show that it’s getting ready for the electrification of American roads, Royal Dutch Shell is buying Greenlots , a Los Angeles-based developer of electric vehicle charging and energy management technologies. Shell, which is making the acquisition through its Shell New Energies US subsidiary, snatched the company from Energy Impact Partners, a cleantech-focused investment firm.

The University of Southern California and 3D game development engine developer Unity Technologies are launching a brand new, online game design course , aimed at both students and "lifelong learners", to help them design and publish their own original games, the two announced on Tuesday. According to Unity Technologies and the USC School of Cinematic Arts, its self-paced, adaptive online course will teach students and prospective developers how to design and publish their original games.

Kinestral , a developer of "smart" electronically controlled tinting glass, which is backed by San Diego's Versant Ventures, said on Wednesday that it has raised $100M in a Series D funding. The funding was ld by SK Holdings, and also included current investors 5AM Ventures, Alexandria Real Estate, Capricorn Investment Group and Versant Ventures. Kinestral, based in Haywards, California said the funding will go towards expanding manufacturing, sales, and installation of its smart-tinting glass.

Irvine-based Acorns , which offers up a micro-investment and savings app, has raised $105M in a Series E funding, which values the company at $860M, the company said this week. The funding came from Comcast Ventures, NBCUniversal, Bain Capital Ventures, BlackRock, Rise Fund, DST, and MSD Capital, among others. acorns is led by CEO Noah Kerner. Acorns' mobile apps include one which rounds up the purchases users make, and invests them in an index fund run by Acorns.

Hawthorne-based SpaceX is shifting its rocket fairing-catching ship, Mr. Steven , to the East Coast, as it concludes the rapid pace of launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base for satellite constellation operator Iridium. Los Angeles-based private equity investor OpenGate Capital has acquired Sargent and Greenleaf , a maker of a wide range of both electric and traditional mechanical locks, from Stanley Black & Decker. Financial details of the acquisition were not announced. According to OpenGate Capital, it expects the acquisition to be complete in Q1 of 2019. Sargent and Greenleaf (S&G) wa founded in 1857, and currently has 120 employees.
