My biggest takeaway this year was truly understanding the strength and cohesion of the Los Angeles startup community. Others still routinely have phone hold queues for customer contact that can last up to an hour, with no alternative options. The best companies have found that it’s important to constantly prepare team members for moving to the next level, through mentoring and training, rather than trying to keep them in their current role.
Thus I offer the following prioritized initiatives from my own experience to get you started: Make sure everyone knows the business, good and bad. Your role is to provide mentoring and support as required. It also means listening and following-up on feedback. Provide training and mentoring directed at career growth.

In my work with startups, I have been struck by how relevant and critical these same initiatives are to even the earliest stage of new ventures, and how hard it is to change later if you don’t get it right the first time. This may seem obvious, but I found it hard to do, given the daily crises and distractions of a normal startup.
You need a plan on how to train yourself, or be mentored, for each step along the way. None of us can keep up on every new thing in this knowledge abundant world. You are all frustrated when that never happens, even after years of 16-hour days, repeated efforts to hire the right people, and multiple campaigns to delegate more and sign up for less. Only then can you start to adjust your time and your company to let it run without your constant involvement.
The market is changing so fast these days, and if you are not planning a solution today for tomorrow’s customers, you may be setting yourself up for failure and don’t even realize it. The alternative is to be into the mode of playing catch-up, which can cause you to make mistakes in execution, or even get there too late.

Thus I find that two heads are usually better than one in a startup. Way back in the early eighties, I had the privilege of working with Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, when Microsoft was still a startup. Your best friend, spouse or a family member is the least likely candidate, so don’t start there.
This may seem counter-intuitive to many managers who fear losing their best employees, since managers never seem to have time to focus on recruiting and mentoring new talent. You need to understand the cohort effect (experiences shared by a group), and mentor individual team members on how to initiate, manage, and utilize key relationships.
One of the questions we discussed is, “How much capital should a startup raise?” In his words, [in some instances] “because lots of capital is available, the company takes on the capital and that ends up resulting in no constraints on decision making and so the company decides to do five things in stead of just one.”
