. - A tale of two pitches (I eventually invested in the first company that pitched). Today’s post is a subtle one about positioning yourself in a presentation. It’s any meeting where you are in a small room and are being called on to present on some form of overhead slides. Sitting by the screen is the best excuse.

Most people suck at presenting to big groups. It’s a shame because the ability to nail these presentations at key conferences can be once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to influence journalists, business partners, potential employees, customers and VCs. – No great presentation can be delivered like a conversation.

First, if it’s an early stage company, I don’t need to see a powerpoint deck. I funded them 8 weeks later.

I’ve seen several presentations that never moved past the first slide before running out of time. The first words out of your mouth should be “Can everyone hear me, and read the screen?” Research your audience before presenting. Others can be present for effect, but deferrals to team members for answers are a sign of weakness.
