A little while ago, I suggested that Every Web/Mobile Startup Should Have a Technical Advisor. But, advisors, coaches, and mentors can often fill the bill. In creating Mentor Night , I’ve been happy to hear how giving most people are. Maybe it’s knowledge of the players and dynamics of the mobile ad ecosystem.

Greg was the first person to share with me the insights of mobile conversion and why with a simpler product selection and conversion funnel they would get higher conversion on mobile than on the web. Natural mentors – a desire to help. On each subsequent meeting I’d learn a little bit more. Community builders.

One of the great joys of doing the web series This Week in VC every week is that I get to spend time with great people debating the issues of our day including how our industry is evolving as well as insights into how companies got started, got their initial traction and dealt with adversities. Oh, yeah. Positive feedback feeds the idea.

Are users willing to check into local businesses with another, mobile check-in product? For local businesses, we're also giving them free mobile web sites, and working on other relationships. The big thing for us has been those connections to investors and mentors. The feedback, mentors, and connections are amazing.

Those programs--epitomized by YCombinator in the Bay Area, and TechStars in Boulder, Colorado--attract newly minted entrepreneurs with a mixture of cash and mentoring, and a program which rapidly takes ideas and turns them into viable, executing businesses. Those mentors are not just Bruce and I, although we are full time on this.
