I like to book my own travel, so I might be on Expedia or on an airplane. Our new customer acquisition has grown and our costs have plummeted. We are actually getting paid now to obtain customers, so our customer acquisition costs are now negative. A negative customer acquisition cost! What motivates you to do that?

RedBeacon went on to sell to HomeDepot in what was considered a very successful acquisition on all sides. But Ethan had left by the time of the acquisition.

My firm, GRP Partners, invested in the company that innovated this entire category – Overture (formerly known as GoTo.com). But of course Google eventually became the massive winner in this category. This no doubt led to the acquisition of AdMob by Google and Quattro by Apple. I’ll save it for a future post.
