As the founder of an accelerator, I'm constantly being approached by ambitious people with big ideas, and generally we invest in 1/100th of what comes to us. This year, we were lucky enough to find 40 great startups to invest in, growing StartEngine immensely. Finally, Google. Google continues to shape our futures.

But as sweet as that success has been (we invested pre-revenue in a small team) today my even more important news was the further expansion of our partner ranks. It was a software platform for allowing advertisers to purchase brand integration (product placements) as a standardized unit through a marketplace. I stayed close.

They cite Quara, Google, Twitter & Facebook as obvious examples. Besides, why call when you can use Google, or send a Twitter message?” Google doesn’t seem to ever take calls from ME when I have a complaint! Google, Facebook & Twitter all provide free services to end users and we eat them up.

During the latter half of 2011, Google awarded a number of leading YouTubers and nascent Internet TV networks grants of $1 million to $2 million. Although estimates of Google’s total investment vary, the industry insiders I spoke with believe it exceeded $100 million.

The consumer piece is a big part of our business, and the next big piece is the advertiser platform, plus everything we wrap around the advertiser experience, helping them to manage their content, and provide great reporting, and helping them to understand the ROI of doing business with us. Outside of Facebook, Google is the internet.

Looking ahead at the next decade I am excited by what I believe will be viewed as one of the best and most rational investment periods for venture capital due to seven discrete factors: 1. So it is unsurprising that an over-funding environment and the commensurate returns hangover would have lasted until about – well – 2012.
