The electric utility said that it started installing smart meters starting in September 2009, with a plan to install five million smart meters for both residential and small business customers by the end of 2012. The utility says it hopes to reduce demand on the grid by about 1,000 megawatts through the installation of the meters.

Most controllers out there now are timers, which basically do not react to water demand. Instead, we run a model in the cloud based on the weather and calculate actual water demand, and we adjust the schedule on a daily basis. We do see the biggest demand in spring and summer, but we don''t think that is insurmountable.
