As a mentor to aspiring entrepreneurs, I often feel the frustration of someone trying to build a startup in the wrong place and time, and wrongly attributing their struggle to personal limitations. I saw these addressed well in a new book, “ The Startup Community Way ,” by Brad Feld and Ian Hathaway.

And I am often approached by entrepreneurs in cities which don’t have a vibrant VC community. Thus, a desire to invest more locally where I think I have a competitive advantage. Plus, they know the local market better and therefore don’t have the uninformed biases of those that don’t. Local knowledge runs deep.

We all could learn a bit more about balance , as Brad Feld has outlined. Many through history became entrepreneurs precisely because they were unemployable. The Dave I know is a tireless traveler and loyal to his friends the way Brad Feld is. Brad does this kind of thing for people. But he knows that.

We know to do this we need to fund projects that are more difficult in scope, more ambitious in industry transformation, less obvious in market adoption and a higher probability of not working. They have plans to go after they peanut allergies and move on to a host of other food-related illnesses and problems including dairy.

In my bones I’m convinced that entrepreneurs are more nature than nurture although I know both are involved. I have recently written extensively on what I believe the 12 characteristics of an entrepreneur are.
