I was on This Week in VentureCapital (TWiVC) again this week with Jason Calacanis. He’s behind IdeaLab and has created many interesting companies including innovating in solar energy ( eSolar ) and electric cars ( Aptera ). I found this investment strange since normally VC’s hate to bet on gaming companies.

To provide an opportunity for VCs and senior executives to engage with the community by giving back rather than just attending more cocktail parties.
It was especially fun for me because we got the chance to talk about the VC industry and how entrepreneurs should think about the VC industry in addition to discussing deals. Pasadena-based Idealab has launched a new company, TweetUp , which focused on showcasing Twitter users and helping them to grow an online following. its new Twitter marketplace was founded by Idealab's Bill Gross, and has scored funding from Index Ventures, betaworks, Revolution LLC, First Round Capital, Jason Calacanis, and Jeff Jarvis.
Pasadena-based Idealab has made another investment in a Twitter-related service, in GoPollGo , which said today that it has launched an online polling service based on Twitter. The firm said it recently closed a seed funding from Idealab. Financial details of that funding were not disclosed. GoPollGo was founded by Ben Schaechter.
Pasadena-based Idealab has led a round into LA-spawned Mingly , a developer of software which connects Gmail with a user's social networks. Pasadena-based Idealab announced today that it has invested in a developer of clean energy generation technology. The firm has invested in Cool Energy , a Boulder, Colorado based developer of Stirling engine technology, used to convert heat energy into power. Financial details of the funding were not announced.
