Stroome said the site provides a place where journalists, filmmakers, musicians, students, sports enthusiasts, travelers, activists, and bloggers can upload, edit, and remix video through their web browser. Stroome was founded by Nonny de La Pena and Tom Grasty, both of whom are graduate students at USC's Annenberg School of Journalism.

Los Angeles-based online movie information and ticketing site Fandango said Thursday that it is continuing its efforts at creating original content for the service, with the second season launch of its series "Fandango Frontrunners". The series, hosted by Dave Karger, interviews with stars, directors, producers, and others.

Last week, Los Angeles-based Stroome (www.stroome.com), a new startup originally spawned out of a project at the USC Annenberg School of Communications, won $200,000 in the 2010 Knight News Challenge. Tom Grasty: Essentially, we started off as a graduate school project at USC. A few months later, we won the USC New Venture Competition.

Big Stage--which was a spinout of technology developed at USC--allowed users to upload several photographs of themselves into software, which then automatically converted those photographs into a realistic avatar. Those avatars could be used in virtual worlds, video clips, video games, and for social networking sites.

The site--created by he 11th Hour Project and Insight Campaigns--says it is aimed helping Angelenos browse, learn, and "fall in love with the next generation of cars."

According to Bloom Energy--whose fuel cells convert such sources of energy as natural gas into electricity, as an alternative to more traditional power grid use--The Alhambra will use its fuel cells to generate electricity on site at The Alhambra's campus, in order to lower CO2 emissions compared to the local electric grid.

Pasadena-based Big Stage Entertainment , which develops 3D avatar technology, said today that it has partnered with video game company GGL Global Gaming, to provide free game content on its web site. We teach through video tutorials, with courses around specific sites, like how to make content for FunnyorDie, taught by one of the staff writers from FunnyOrDie.

Sherry Gunther: MyMiniPeeps.com is a unique, online community for kids ages 6-13, which is both a social networking community as well as a game site. It's unique, in that it encompasses the concept that the kids are empowered to run the community, instead of just hanging out and visiting it like most sites.

By offering that software for free, we've attracted over 10,000 writers to our site. What we've done, is we attract those writers to our site, and have a revenue model based on the content. That target market is huge, and includes sites like YouTube, you also have Revision3, and other sites doing short videos.

We looked at other sites, such as Cross Campus Santa Monica, and we saw the events they were running, which we went to a lot before they opened a location here. There are also many from USC and UCLA. We looked around the country at other co-working spaces, and see how it's been the hub for lots of growth and activity.

Mike Tringe earned his BA in History and Science from Harvard, and his MFA in Film Production from USC. He’s worked as an English and Film teacher at the American School of Tangier, and has also assistant taught film production at USC. Sara Akhteh received her BA in Film Theory from UCSC and her MFA from USC in Production.
