Ali Khoshgozaran: Before we started the company, me and my partner had participated in the USC Viterbi startup competition. About 100 teams participated in that competition, and 10 teams were selected to be part of USC''s Viterbi Startup Garage program. An example of that is the UCLA flood. How did Tilofy come about?

Ann Wang: For example, we partner with one of the brands called Hiptipico, which is based out of Guatemala. We went to junior high school and UCLA together. We were seniors at UCLA, and both of us in very different areas. They were doing great work, but they had no e-commerce or marketing team to get them out there.

Investors are very focused on diligence, on business models that make sense, and those companies that have a definite competitive advantage and defensibility to what they're doing. For example, our LA network is having the Fast Pitch on the 24th at UCLA. So you don't see as many people looking for funding now?

They're pretty competitive about deals. For example, MuckerLab, had 100 percent of their companies funded out of their most recent class. If you walk down the hallways of UCLA or USC, and ask them for the successful startups here, they can't name anyone. Valuation here are much more attractive too.

For example, at an event, say at the Staples Center, of the 20,000 seats they might have four or five price groups. For example, at a concert, they sell the front row -- which is clearly worth more -- the same as the cost of the 50th row. When I graduated from UCLA in 1999, I started working for an accounting firm.

Thibault Mathieu: Morgan and I were both in film school at UCLA. We were initially covering events like sports and arts festivals when we first launched a beta version of the WESAWIT app at UCLA. Examples would include the pictures WESAWIT receives. We were also really happy when we first launched our beta at UCLA.

There is lots of competition in this area for serving retirement homes. Elizabeth Amini: My first company was in graphic design, and provide both graphics for the entertainment industry, but also buildling websites for UCLA and all kinds of places around science, astrophysics, and those types of departments.
