Call of Duty Black Ops Hits $1B in Sales

Santa Monica-based Activision disclosed yesterday that Call of Duty: Black Ops has surpassed over $1 billion in sales worldwide. Activision said, according to its internal estimates, its sell through of the title since November 9, it has racked up over $1 billion in sales. The title had already broken sales records previously held by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Activision also said that over 600 million hours have been logged playing the game since launch.

Santa Monica-based Cornerstone On Demand , which recently filed for an IPO on the NASDAQ Global Market as CSOD, has updated its IPO filings documents with the SEC. The firm's latest S-1 shows that the firm had revenues of $32.572M for the nine months ended September 30th, and had a net loss of $31.4M, due to an accounting charge of $24.0M due to the change in the fair value of its preferred stock warrant liabilities.

According to the WSJ, the SEC is looking at trading of private shares of companies--done through such sites as Santa Monica-based SharesPost and New York's SecondMarket --specifically looking at funds which are buying up shares of popular companies like Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, and LinkedIn. The Securities and Exchange Commission is in the midst of a probe of companies which allow the buying and selling of private company shares, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
Demand Media Sets IPO Offering Size, Boosts Traffic

Santa Monica-based Demand Media is inching closer to its IPO debut, saying in an updated S-1 this morning that it plans to offer 7.5 million shares of its common stock in its IPO. The firm, which has not yet set a pricing range, has applied to list on the NYSE as DMD. Demand said in the filing it plans to sell 4,500,000 shares of the stock in the offering, with selling stockholders selling an additional 3,000,000 shares.

Search engine giant Google said over the weekend that the firm has been developing technology for self driving cars, driving automated cars across California, including Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Google said the cars have driven from Google's Mountain View campus to its Santa Monica office, on Hollywood Boulevard, and up and down the Pacific Coast Highway, among other areas, logging over 140,000 miles.

Santa Monica-based SharesPost , the marketplace for private companies headed by Greg Brogger, has cooked up a new index of private companies, the firm said today. SharesPost said its index will track the performance of "blue chip" venture backed, pre-IPO companies such as Facebook, Linden Lab, LinkedIn, Tesla Motors, Serious Materials, Twitter, and Zynga. The firm said the SharesPost Index will reflect real-time, market input into the value of those firms.

EdgeCast Trumpets Customer Gains

Santa Monica-based content delivery network provider EdgeCast Networks said Friday that it now has more than 2000 customers, or more than double the number of customers from the previous year, as of the close of 2010. The firm said those customers include AdColony, Dreamstime, SlashGear, StreamCity, and Tumblr. The firm did not say what that customer count equaled in terms of financial performance. EdgeCast is venture backed by Menlo Ventures and Steamboat Ventures.

Santa Monica-based Demand Media reported its results Thursday, saying that it had a net loss of $5.6 in revenues the firm reported in Q1 of 2010. million on revenues of $79.5M. Revenues were up 48 percent compared to the $53.6M Demand Media said the revenues numbers were driven by continued momentum from its owned and operated sites. Demand also mentioned strong direct brand advertising sales helped its results.
