You’re sales person is getting blocked by the CTO who says she shouldn’t go above him but the CTO isn’t approving the deal. He was a really nice and personable guy who had deep domain knowledge in an industry that he’d worked in for 10 years that is in need of technological advancement.
His basic point was: If someone, including me, tells you something isn’t a great idea and there’s no market for it there are only two acceptable responses. I’ve worked with 30+ early-stage companies in all sorts of capacities (and spoken to many, many more), so I thought it might be worthwhile trying to classify the various ways that I’ve engaged in different technology roles in startups. Actually, David’s taking even broader roles than I generally do as he’s CEO for at least one startup.
It’s generally a good idea to go through each of these line items to try to better understand what’s involved, especially for the ones that are bigger or that don’t seem to line up with your understanding of complexity. I.e., they need a developer more than they need a CTO.

Entrepreneurs are supposed to have insights that others don’t have and we’re supposed to be good judges about which entrepreneurs and executives have both the most clever ideas and the right skill sets to do transformational things against all odds. I don’t think this is the job. So I tell people we’re fundamentally in the people business.
Before I started my first company in 1999 I worked for Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). The lead architect was blocking new ideas.
