Calabasas-based Ixia , the developer of network testing equipment and software, announced this morning that it is in a definitive agreement to acquire BreakingPoint Systems , a developer of security testing tools. Ixia has been in an acquisitive mood lately, most recently acquiring network monitoring equipment firm Anue Systems in May.

San Diego-based Active Network , the operator of sports registration and online community sites, said in a filing today that it had a net loss of $10.9M on revenues of $72.71M for the three months ended March 31, 2011. The firm--which is currently in IPO registration--also set its trading symbol as ACTV. on revenues of $63.2M.

Los Angeles-based Fullscreen Network is being acquired by Otter Media , a joint venture of AT&T and The Chernin Group, in a deal which is reportedly worth between $200M and $300M. Calabasas-based network testing equipment provider Ixia said Monday morning that it has agreed to buy Anue Systems , a developer of network monitoring and test products, in a deal worth $145M in cash. Ixia said that Anue had 2011 revenues of $40.5M, with revenues of $47.6M in the twelve months ended March 31, 2012.

Los Angeles-based streaming television service Hulu announced late Thursday that it is selling its Japanese business to Nippon Television Network Corporation (Nippon TV). The number of IPOs of companies on the Journal's list from 2011 from Southern California matched the number of IPOs of Silicon Valley companies. Of the list of 50 startups, both San Diego's ServiceNow and fellow San Diego firm Active Network has IPOs last year, out of only a total of six IPO exits from the WSJ's list.

What's critical, is we don't run a network, install antennas, or build up a network. We've only got 40-45 people, versus if you look at a Verizon or AT&T, where they have tens of thousands of people having to support their network and provide customer support. We're able to create some margin off pay-as-you-go.

Westlake Village-based online advertising firm ValueClick announced this morning that it has acquired Greystripe , an operator of a brand-focused mobile advertising network. The company expects Greystripe to add $24 to $26M in revenues for the remainder of 2011. The deal was worth $70M in cash.

Montgomery believes there will be 50 IPOs in 2010 as there is pent-up supply and a higher risk tolerance amongst institutional public investors harmonizing at 40 deals / year for the 3 years starting in 2011. When they look at buying your company they often think in terms of “how long will it take until I earn back the profits to pay for my acquisition price?”

The difference in what we're doing, is we're an active sensor network. In 2004, we switched over to Zigbee sensor networks, 802.15.4, I think that there might be cash toward the end of 2010 or 2011, where IPOs might be reasonable. Jason Howe: RFID is used a lot in pharmacies. Our RFID tags have their own battery power.

The movie, “The Social Network” might have had more of an impact on creating future entrepreneurs than any other event of the past 5 years. The numbers of potential buyers had decreased dramatically both because large companies were shedding jobs and because many past buyers simply lacked resources to make acquisitions.
