So I thought I’d write a post about how I drive my personal creativity. (A It’s why I always work hard to find images for my blog posts & why all of my keynote presentations are visual rather than bullet points with words. The need for creativity extends well beyond product design. What exactly is visualization?
We know that good visual storytelling can be persuasive and we know that it is also important to retaining key information after a presentation has been completed or a report has been shared. Think of time spent outlining presentations and swapping online and offline notes with co-authors before you even start building.
Passion is also the featured heavily in nearly every presentation I give to entrepreneurs or on college campuses or in talks with MBA students. Tristan told me that he thought he could design shaving products for people of color that would solve this problem. The reality is quite the opposite.
Most designers, at least the ones I know, hate to network and rarely do it. The key to networking in the tech world is you do not need to be the best in the world, you just need to be passionate, willing to learn and in a lot of cases be the best designer or developer that people know. Reach out to people you want to meet.
The short answer is that you should have multiple versions of your “pitch deck” (a short, visual presentation in Keynote, PPT or similar and shared as a PDF) and each occasion has a specific goal. I’ve seen that in courses and in design specs many times, and it’s a HORRIBLE IDEA. It’s one thing when you provide a blank space to write your goals when you are in a classroom and there’s a teacher who can help you. We always present why this is important and ask some questions around it.
The key thing in figuring out how to design this kind of event and content, is you want to be able to provide really practical advice, and make sure you bring in people who tell it like it is. You want to get some candor from the executives who are presenting as part of the event. It's a great event.
