Two good examples are children's entertainment company (Spin Master) which launched an AR drone-racing game for the holiday season. The company won numerous awards during his tenure as CEO. While flying a drone is fun, adding an AR element and a virtual world takes things to the next level. It combines innovation and entertainment.

TWTFelipe and I ended up speaking for nearly 30 minutes and we talked mostly about why his company was based in Canada and not the US. In 2005 he was graduated and took a job in South Carolina working for technology company while he started his own web design company on the side. So he decided to start his company in Canada.

So the industry formed around a day of the week when all partners could avoid having company board meetings or traveling. Valuations were enormous relative to progress in companies. Companies with less than $2 million in revenue were asking for $50-60 million valuations and getting them. Yesterday was a Monday. Depressing.

One of the companies that just announced $10 million in funding was a company I had never heard of called Huddle. With Huddle, you can manage people, projects and information inside and outside your company, securely.. I always worry about companies that spread themselves too broadly. So Skype was ubiquitous.

In 2009 Jed created a Google doc to track the seed accelerators. The money that went into them was usually very inefficiently deployed because it was deployed against infrastructure, it was deployed against a longer arc of build-up and you were into a company a while before you knew whether something was going to work or not.

However, there are lots of companies that are making money from open source and freemium models. A friend of mine has a company that builds open source applications in spaces that are a bit less innovative than Elgg, but they do very well financially through the packaging and support models.
