Southern California Firms Get $694M In Q3 2012 Venture Funding

The latest numbers from the PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture Capital Association MoneyTree report finds that companies here in Southern California raised $695.4M in funding in Q3, up in terms of dollars from Q3 of last year, when $670.9M was raised.

Users of Apple's new iPhone 5 and iOS 6 have another vendor supporting Apple's new wallet feature, Passbook today, as Goldstar , the Pasadena-based provider of half price live entertainment tickets announced integration with the feature. Goldstar, which offers last-minute bargains on live events like concerts, theater, comedy, sports, and other entertainment, said that Goldstar's mobile website and "will call" purchase confirmations are now Passbook compatible.

Huntington Beach-based AnyMeeting , the provider of free web conferencing and online meeting software, said this week that it has integrated its products with VMware's Zimbra Collaboration Software. AnyMeeting said its new AnyMeeting Zimlet product allows Zimbra users to schedule, launch, and manage AnyMeeting online meetings from within Zimbra. Zimbra is an email and collaboration software product which acquired by VMware in 2010.

TeleNav said it would pay $22.5M, consisting of $18.5M in cash plus restricted stock and assumed options for ThinkNear. All of ThinkNear's twelve employees are joining TeleNav's mobile local advertising group.

Quest Software Founders Next Move? Energy Independence

Vinny Smith , the co-founder, chairman, and former CEO of Aliso Viejo-based Quest Software , has donated $1M in an effort to spur energy independence in the U.S., Smith said this week. Smith said he is making a $1M donation to the Fuel Freedom Foundation, which says it is a non-partisan nonprofit dedicated to "breaking America's oil addiction". The group says it is striving to remove barriers to competition from such fuels as natural gas, methanol, ethanol and electricity.

Carpinteria-based Helix Medical , a manufacturer for the medical device and healthcare industry, has acquired MedVenture Technology Corp. , a medical device design, development, and manufacturing company. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. MedVenture is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, and has offices in Indiana and Minnesota. MedVenture was owned by private equity firm Ampersand Capital Partners.

Ingram Micro Completes BrightPoint Buy

Santa Ana-based Ingram Micro said Monday that it has acquired BrightPoint , a distributor of products for the wireless market. Ingram said it is paying $9.00 per share in cash for BrightPoint. The deal is worth approximately $840M. The deal had originally been announced in July.
